Korea International Water Week, October 19-22, 2016

The Republic of Korea is continuing the achievements of the 7th World Water Forum with Korea International Water Week. 

 

Co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT), the Ministry of Environment (ME), Daegu Metropolitan City, Gyeongsangbuk-Do Province and K-water of the Republic of Korea, the Korea International Water Week (KIWW) was held in Daegu from October 19 to 22. This first edition of the KIWW aimed to help “designing concrete and feasible implementation solutions and reviewing the result of the 7th World Water Forum” and discuss ways to integrate them into national policies and practices.

Organized around the main theme “Water Cooperation for Sustainable Development”, KIWW 2016 included prominent sessions such as World Water Partnership, Water Leaders’ Round Table, World Water Cities Forum and the Implementation Roadmaps (IR) Review Meeting, which was the first annual review meeting for the implementation roadmaps that were included in the 7th World Water Forum’s Daegu-Gyeongbuk Implementation Commitment to be followed up until the 8th World Water Forum.

 

The World Water Partnership meeting involved the host countries of the previous World Water Fora to foster a partnership towards water security and contribute to the next World Water Forum. SUEN President Prof. Ahmet Mete Saatci attended this meeting to represent Turkey as the Vice Secretary General of the 5th World Water Forum. The World Water Partnership meeting adopted a Call for Action, which aims to bring what previous host countries wish to deliver to the next World Water Forum and other important international water conferences and fora.

 

Prof. Saatci also attended the Water Leaders’ Round Table meeting, which seeked for high-level commitment to developing practical and tangible plans for water to achieve sustainable development goals. Saatci delivered a short speech outlining Turkey’s main water problems and the sustainable solutions brought to them. The Water Leaders’ Round Table meeting adopted an Action Commitment that includes various implementation measures for resolving global water challenges.
