The regional meeting on “Antibiotic Resistance and Wastewater Surveillance from a One-Health Perspective” was held in Istanbul on 15 October 2024 in collaboration between SUEN and the Turkish Society of Microbiology. During the meeting, discussions were conducted to develop multidisciplinary solutions for the issues of antibiotic resistance and wastewater surveillance.
Prof. Dr. Lütfi Akca, President of SUEN, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Banu Kaşkatepe, One Health Working Group Chair of Turkish Society of Microbiology, and Prof. Dr. Sebahat Aksaray, Board Member of Turkish Society of Microbiology delivered the opening speeches.
The first session, titled 'Antibiotic Resistance from a One Health Perspective,' was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sebahat Aksaray from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Health Sciences and Prof. Dr. Muammer Göncüoğlu from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ankara University. In this session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serap Süzük Yıldız from the University of Health Sciences and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Banu Kaşkatepe from Ankara University presented the global scope of the antibiotic resistance problem and the impact of non-medical antibiotic use on resistance.
The second session, titled 'Solutions to Antibiotic Resistance from a One Health Perspective,' continued by the moderation of SUEN Wastewater Epidemiology Project Consultant Prof. Dr. Ahmet Mete Saatçi and Prof. Dr. Naim Deniz Ayaz from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Kırıkkale University. Prof. Dr. Hakan Yardımcı from Ankara University and SUEN Wastewater Epidemiology Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Bilge Alpaslan Kocamemi gave presentations on multidisciplinary solutions to antibiotic resistance and the monitoring of antibiotic resistance through wastewater surveillance.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the "One Health" approach in combatting antibiotic resistance as a global problem and facilitated exchange of opinions among participants from public, academic, private, and civil society sectors.
