The first harvest period is completed in November 2021 as part of the field works for "reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes" implemented in the Konya Closed Basin within the scope of the WATERMED project funded through the EU PRIMA programme.
The field works focused on the cultivation of corn and sugar beet plants with treated wastewater; crops that are predominantly grown in the region and consume high amounts of water. It was aimed to clearly determine the effects of treated wastewater on two different plant species by comparing the crops irrigated with the treated wastewater from the KOSKİ Wastewater Treatment Plant with the those irrigated with groundwater.
The data gained from the field will be fed into the WATERMED platform (decision support system) being developed as part of the project and contribute to the creation of irrigation and fertilization programs by the platform for the next period.
The results were shared with the farmers in the Karatay region by means of a workshop held on 21st of December 2021. More than 30 farmers attended the meeting hosted by the Karatay Chamber of Agriculture, where their opinions on irrigation with treated wastewater were noted and a survey study was conducted.
