A special session on "A New Perspective in Public Health Monitoring: Wastewater Surveillance" was organized by SUEN on 5th of July 2023 in collaboration with the European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of Hungary and National Institute for Public Health and Environment of the Netherlands as part of the 7th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health held in Budapest between 5-7 July 2023.

The session was attended by high-level representatives of the national and international organizations working in environment and public health.

As part of the opening remarks of the session, SUEN President Prof. Dr. Lütfi Akca highlighted the wastewater surveillance studies carried out in Turkey since 2020 under the coordination of SUEN and stated that these studies are also performed in the earthquake zone. He underlined that the knowledge and experience gained from the studies are shared on different international platforms and that these studies are highly beneficial in possible outbreaks in the future within the ‘One Health' approach that aims the development of global health security.
